Mononucleosis Test (Mono Test)
The Mononucleosis Test, or mono test, is designed to determine whether or not your body contains the Epstein-Barr virus (the virus that causes mononucleosis).
- Test Preparation:
- None
- Testing Method:
- Blood draw
The Mononucleosis Test, or mono test, is designed to determine whether or not your body contains the Epstein-Barr virus (the virus that causes mononucleosis). Dubbed “the kissing disease” due to its transmission through saliva, mono is extremely contagious and commonly impacts teenagers and young adults. Mononucleosis causes flu-like symptoms including fever, sore throat, fatigue, headaches, and loss of appetite. Symptoms typically last anywhere from a few weeks (common) to a few months (rare). Unfortunately, there is no cure or specific treatment for mono other than rest, fluids, and proper diet. As symptoms are comparable to influenza or the common cold, the only way to confirm or rule out a mono diagnosis is to take a mononucleosis test.
How Your Mono Test Works
Are you worried that you might have mononucleosis due to lingering fatigue, weakness, or cold and flu symptoms? A mono test can help clear up any questions and give you more insights into your physical state. Priority Lab Testing makes the process easy. You simply add the mono test to your cart, then check out online. When it’s convenient for you, you can go in to one of our more than 4,000 testing facilities to have your test performed. A mono test is a simple blood draw, which will be performed by one of our qualified technicians. In most cases, you’ll be able to take care of your mono test and be on your way within just 30 minutes.
Common Symptoms of Mono
Many of the symptoms of mononucleosis mimic basic cold and flu symptoms. However, they can linger for weeks or, in some cases, even months. Mono symptoms may include things like:
- Lasting fatigue
- Headaches
- Body aches
- Swollen lymph nodes, usually noticeable in the neck or armpits
- Lingering fever
- Sore throat
- Unexplained rash
Individuals with mono may think at first that they have cold or flu symptoms. Over time, however, they may grow concerned that they have a more serious ailment or issue. You may want to have a mono test done if you have symptoms lasting for more than 10 days, or if your doctor has recommended a mono test based on your symptoms.
Interpreting the Results of Your Mononucleosis Test
When your mono test results come back, you will see three columns. The “range” column will let you know what type of measurement you can expect of your results. The “results” tab will lay out the specific results of your mono test. Finally, the “flag” column will explain the results of your test, which could indicate whether you have mono. If you have questions about the results of your mono test, a care counselor can help you learn more.
Mononucleosis Test Versus Comprehensive Vitamin Panel
When you feel tired and run-down for a long period of time, you may end up struggling to figure out what is actually wrong and what you should do next. Do you have a serious illness, or a vitamin deficiency that needs to be addressed? Often, your doctor may recommend taking more than one blood test at the same time to help rule out potential conditions or complications.
In general, you may need a mono test when you have long-lasting cold and flu symptoms, including fever or rash, over a long period of time. You may choose a comprehensive vitamin panel if you feel tired and run-down, but do not feel ill or show any ongoing symptoms of illness.
